The group was inspired by similar lineups led by organist 'Big' John Patton in the 1960s and
vibist Bobby Hutcherson in the early 2000s.
A mere three weeks later,
vibist Julius Gubenko recorded an album he entitled Jew Jazz, which his record company in a fit of anxiety renamed Terry Gibbs Plays Jewish Melodies in Jazz time.
Elsewhere tomorrow (Friday), special mention must go to another biggish band, trumpeter Rory Simmons' Fringe Magnetic, at The Hall, Christ College at 10.30pm; saxophonist John Surman with bassist Chris Laurence and a string quartet on the Christ College Stage at 9.30pm; and the Pascal Schumacher Quartet, led by the
vibist, at The Hall at 7.30pm.
In "Two Ones", jazz clarinetist Harry Skoler teams up with
vibist Ed Saindon to compose and perform original jazz creations, some of which are clarient and piano duets while others are quintet productions with Matt Marvuglio on flute, Barry Smith on bass, and Bob Tamagni on drums.
Oliver brought out Wolf when the orchestra moved into the more traditional swing sections of the show, and the
vibist dazzled on Count Basie's "Shiny Stockings," pitching hard-bop patter against the elastic arrangement of the horn section.
Violinist Regina Carter,
vibist Gary Burton, percussionist Poncho Sanchez and saxophonist Wayne Shorter will play up a storm at the inaugural Portland Jazz festival next weekend.
Hancock will be joined by three other top jazz musicians -
vibist Bobby Hutcherson, drummer Terri Lynne Carrington and Scott Colley on bass.
He has called in a favour from the fine New York
vibist Joe Locke (Smith has played in Locke's Walls of Freedom band) to play the guest star here, but there is enough star potential in the band to suggest they would have managed pretty well anyway.
His big breakthrough came when he was chosen by the great US
vibist Roy Ayers for his legendary band.
