[Middle English, from Old English, from Latin rosa.]
Word History: It is etymologically correct to drink a julep while watching the Run for the Roses. The English word rose comes from Latin and Old French. Latin rosa may be an Etruscan form of Greek Rhodia, "Rhodian, originating from Rhodes." The Attic Greek word for rose is rhodon, and in Sappho's Aeolic dialect of Greek it is wrodon. In Avestan, the language of the Persian prophet Zoroaster, "rose" is varəda and in Armenian vard, words both related to the Aeolic form. The Modern Persian word for "rose" is gul (which, believe it or not, is descended from a form quite similar to varəda through a series of regular sound changes); and gul-āb is "rose-water." Gulāb is also a drink made of water and honey or syrup. The name of this Persian treat was borrowed into Arabic as julāb and then, through Spanish and French, became julep in English, the ambrosia for sipping on Derby Day.

"She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses," cried the young Student; "but in all my garden there is no red rose."
"No red rose in all my garden!" he cried, and his beautiful eyes filled with tears.
His hair is dark as the hyacinth-blossom, and his lips are red as the rose of his desire; but passion has made his face like pale ivory, and sorrow has set her seal upon his brow."
Rose had been deeply touched by the thoroughness of Martin's plans, by his unfailing consideration for her comfort.
As soon as he had entered Rose's little parlor he had exclaimed with an enthusiasm unusual with him: "We broke the ground for your new garden, today, Rose of Sharon, and Fletcher wants to see you.
There had been a wistfulness, so rarely in Martin's voice, that Rose had detected it instantly.
Rose sat all alone in the big best parlor, with her little handkerchief laid ready to catch the first tear, for she was thinking of her troubles, and a shower was expected.
Rose really did have some cause to be sad; for she had no mother, and had lately lost her father also, which left her no home but this with her great-aunts.
One of the boys who shared it was called Rose. He was in the same form as Philip, and Philip had always looked upon him with envious admiration.
With Rose, because he was as little able as anyone else to resist his charm, Philip was even more than usually shy and abrupt; and whether on account of this, unconsciously bent upon exerting the fascination he knew was his only by the results, or whether from sheer kindness of heart, it was Rose who first took Philip into the circle.
CONTAINING THE UNSATISFACTORY RESULT OF OLIVER'S ADVENTURE; AND A CONVERSATION OF SOME IMPORTANCE BETWEEN HARRY MAYLIE AND ROSE
But, although this happy change had a visible effect on the little circle; and although cheerful voices and merry laughter were once more heard in the cottage; there was at times, an unwonted restraint upon some there: even upon Rose herself: which Oliver could not fail to remark.
