In 1922, the Spanish engineer Juan de La Cierva was in the final development stage of an
autogyro: an airplane whose wings were replaced by a free-spinning rotor, which was entirely driven by the speed of the forward propeller.
Nikolai Kamov, who has been credited with coining the Russian word for helicopter, "vertolyot", was actively involved in design and development of an
autogyro, a predecessor of a helicopter, as early as in the 1920s.

A pilot who flew from Shropshire aiming to become the first person to circumnavigate the world in an
autogyro is set to fly through Poland today - but it has not always been plain sailing for the audacious pioneer, who has escaped deadly thunderstorms and crash landings unscathed.
This center, which opened in 2012, is a pioneer in Mongolian general aviation, providing air tours by Deltalet and
AutoGyro. The center also runs a flight training facility with the program accredited by CAA of the United Kingdom and Mongolia.
The weekend will feature the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, RAF Tutor, RAF Typhoon, Calidus
Autogyro, Global Stars, RN Sea Fury, Wildcat Aerobatics, Huey and Loach, Catalina and the Ulster Gliding Club.
Visitors could still view performances from Extra (High Energy Aerobatics),
Autogyro, Bulldog and Yak-15 during the show, which started later than planned.

Aircraft on display include the
autogyro Little Nellie from You Only Live Twice, which has a fierce array of weaponry that includes front-mounted machine guns, rear-mounted flame throwers and a battery of rockets.
